-Comrade Oshiohmole to deliver 26th Convocation lecture
A total of 6,355 students would be graduating across all Schools in Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu Main Campus, at the 26th Convocation slated for the institution’s Convocation Ground on Thursday, March 8, 2018.
The Rector, Mr Samuel Olayinka Sogunro, who stated this during the pre-Convocation Press Conference held at the institution’s Board Room on Thursday, March 1, 2018, also rolled out the achievements of the institution in the last one year.
211 students out of the total number of 6,355 that would be graduating earned Distinction, 1, 368 were in Upper Credit Class,3,505 in Lower Class while 1, 271 obtained Pass classification.
According to the Rector, the former Governor of Edo State, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, would deliver the 26th Convocation lecture tagged, “Crises of Governance, Governance of Crises: The Role of Education in Nibbling Governance Crises in Nigeria”.
Speaking on the achievements of the institution in the last one year, the Rector listed the completion of LASPOTECH radio, signing of MOU with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), large scale farming of cassava and TETFUND assessment for research among others.
“Let me seize this opportunity to share with the public through you (media), some of our modest milestones since the last Convocation ceremony in March 2017. These achievements include but not limited to:
“We have completed LASPOTECH FM 101.9 with necessary facilities in place which were lacking initially. But the state government, through Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan, the former Special Adviser on Communities and Communications and now Commissioner for Information and Strategy, facilitated the equipping of the station.
“It is ready for commissioning and in fact, the first day it was proposed for commissioning was the day Hon. Bamigbetan was announced as the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State which prevented the commissioning from holding. But very soon, it will be commissioned.”
“We have also signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) for the establishment of a mini power station on Ikorodu campus to tackle the problem of power outage.
The Rector revealed that when the project comes on board, the surrounding communities would benefit from it.
“So far, eight staff have exploited TETFUND facility to carry-out research in different fields in 2017. The institution is awaiting the approval of another 12 staff for research projects.”
“For the first time, the Polytechnic was able to access TETFUND intervention for the fabrication of equipment. About 10 equipments in the School of Engineering were fabricated in 2017. These includes amongst others Palm Oil Processing Plant, Brake Wear Sensor on Automobiles (Tricycle), Multi-Purpose Juice Extractor, Multi-Purpose Threshing Shelling and Cleaning Machine”, Sogunro announced to reporters.
“In the area of sports, Team LASPOTECH emerged the overall best at the Nigerian Polytechnics Games (NIPOGA) tagged, “Nasarawa 2017”.
The Rector also announced that the institution has embarked on large-scale cassava planting in preparation for cassava flour and industrial starch production and that, it has been re-accredited to operate as JAMB CBT Centre.
According to the Rector, the state government has taken necessary steps towards fulfilling the promises made by the governor during the 25th Convocation ceremony in 2017.
The Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode who set the record as the first governor to attend the institution’s Convocation since inception, had pledged to build a high capacity auditorium, administrative building, completion of the abandoned ultra modern sports complex and drone project.
